First understand ED is a broad term that describes the result of many possible conditions that lead to an inability to have or maintain an erection through intercourse.
Physically, ED is often caused by damage to the prostate, diabetes, morbid obesity, poor diet and a lack of exercise, a lack of good sleep, certain drugs (like some anti-depressants), drug abuse in general – particularly alcohol, heroine or heavy amphetamine abuse. It can also be caused by serious heart conditions as well as hormonal dysfunctions (like hypothyroidism for example).
Psychologically ED is most commonly caused by a simple lack of desire for sex, either because a person is constantly tired, or simply that aroused by their partner. Other mental problems that could cause ED are anxiety and depression. With anxiety, its mostly performance anxiety, or nervousness that arises during sexual intimacy, usually if a man feels afraid they cannot please their partner. Other reasons can include physical or sexual abuse during a man’s younger years, bad relationships from the past or if he even just thinks you’ve cheated on him.
ED is usually associated with older men and that is a stereotype. In reality, any man can suffer from it at any age with the right given circumstances. In fact, most guys do experience ED at some point in their life time.
Treating ED basically comes down to understanding the root cause(s) of it and identifying if the probably is physical or mental – or both. Figuring that out will help you decide if you need to see a doctor or a psychiatrist, or both.
