the male mind is way to complex for us to understand. possibly he was self consious of his erection. for instance if you have your mind set on keeping a succesful erection during sex and worrying if it will go limp or not has a huge impact. its all mental game. maybe he got over that and now he has more confidence

Could be stress in his life. One of the Doctors on TV said that ED is an indicator of other things not being the best. Like a build up of plaque in the blood vessels or something like that, because an erection takes good blood flow to start and maintain I think.

There MIGHT have been an underlying physical condition that has healed or gotten better. For example, diabetes is a major cause of ED, but the “ability” will return when the diabetes is brought under control.
There could also be other, non-mental outside causes, such as smoking, alcohol, and illicit drug use (especially pot). Stopping any (or ALL) of these would allow the function to come back.
And then there are the mentally-induced cases, which are not truly Erectile Dysfunction. The most common cause is Performance Anxiety. The man is afraid that he won’t “perform adequately” — so in his fear he fails to perform at all. Kind of like a really bad case of “sexual stage fright”.
STRESS is a really big cause of ED. Job stress, unemployment, health worries — all can cause enough stress to cause a failure.
And simply being uncomfortable in the relationship can cause it. If this is a non-committed relationship (sex without marriage), maybe he is just one of those men who really WANTS to be truly in love with the person he is having sex with. Non-Committed relationship often cause this problem.
If this is a committed (married) relationship,. I’d put my money on either stress-related issues or a hidden physical problem.
BTW: Having ED is a MAJOR indicator of future heart and circulatory problems,. if this man has NOT had a full physical (including the Digital Rectal Exam of the Prostate) then he NEEDS to make the appointment NOW. About 60% of men who have ED with no other obvious physical problems will end up with heart and/or circulation problems within 5 years.

Sometimes – lifestyle changes will do the trick. By – no smoking – no beer/ale – no booze – no drugs of any kind – these interrupt blood flow to the penis resulting in erectile dysfunction or impotence.
